Which report do I need?
ReportForge has three report types. Each answers a different question and takes a different file. This page puts them side by side.
The three reports side by side
| About | Flux analysis | Budget vs actual | Price-volume-mix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | For each account, how much did it move between a prior and a current period, and why? | For each account in a period, how did actual results compare with the budget, and why? | Between two periods, how much of the change in revenue came from price, from volume, from mix, and from products that were added or dropped? |
| What you upload | One row per account, with the prior and current amounts side by side. | One row per account, with the budget and the actual for a period. You can load a full-year budget first. | One row per product, with units and revenue for two periods. |
| What you get | A report on the variance by account, with your reasons for the material moves. | A report for each period of the fiscal year. From the second period on it includes a year-to-date section. | A revenue bridge by product, split into price, volume, mix, and new and discontinued products. |
| Special features | Compare month over month, quarter over quarter, year over year or the same period last year. Start next period carries on from a finalized one. | A fiscal year of up to 12 periods, a full-year budget, budget revisions, and periods that are finalized in order. | Three methods (Standard, Price and volume only, With interaction), optional list prices, and reason links for a colleague outside your account. |
| Best when | You have a prior and a current balance for each account. | You have a budget and an actual for each account. | You have units and revenue by product for two periods. |
All three end in the same report page, with the Fact check panel, versions, exports and read-only share links. Each page below has the exact file format, an example and a sample file.
Three questions to ask
Answer these in order. The first yes tells you where to start.
- Do you want to compare one period with another, account by account? Start with flux analysis. Flux analysis →
- Do you want to compare actual results with a budget? Start with budget vs actual. Budget vs actual →
- Do you want to know why revenue changed, product by product? Start with price-volume-mix. Price-volume-mix →
What all three share
The numbers are computed from your file, not by the AI. You explain the material moves, and an item is material when its change is at least $50,000, or when it moved at least 10% and by at least $10,000. You can change those starting values.
After the report is written, each cited figure is checked back against your data. A report with unverified figures shows a Draft banner. The narrative can still contain errors, so review every report before you rely on it.
Plans and credits
The free trial (10 AI Credits, one analysis covering one period, no card, no time limit) opens all three report types. Single Report ($20 a month) covers the one report type you choose when you first buy it. All Reports ($40 a month) covers all three.
Choosing a report
Upload prior and current balances by account. ReportForge computes the variance, you explain the material moves, and it writes a fact-checked report.
Compare actuals to budget by account and fiscal period, explain the material variances, and generate a fact-checked report.
Bridge a revenue change between two periods into price, volume and mix effects by product, with a fact-checked report.
How a ReportForge report is made: numbers computed from your file, your explanations, and every cited figure checked against your data. What it does not do.
Single Report $20 a month, All Reports $40 a month, monthly add-ons, and a free trial of 10 AI Credits with no card. Invite-only beta.
